The Most Common Builds In Elden Ring

These are the most popular builds around in Elden Ring.

There have been more Elden Ring character builds introduced to the Lands Between, making the game much more enjoyable due to the variety of character concepts. It's always great to see fresh ideas in the game, especially in multiplayer situations. However, some builds remain more prominent than others.

It takes a skilled pilot to control any character build because, after numerous updates, weapons and stats are more evenly distributed. Still, the more common builds make a solid starting point for anyone looking to begin creating their Tarnished character.

All the greatswords seem to have received a decent buff since launch, but the original holds a special place in the hearts of many as it resembles the famous sword from Berserk. At first, the sword was impractical because it was slow and heavy. However, after pairing it with the solid Ash of War skill, the sword has been seeing more play.

The Giant Hunt Ash of War is among one of the more popular skills used in character builds to launch foes up into the air. Another favorite is the Lions Claw Ash of War, which gives characters the ability to jump into a somersault flip attack. The Lions Claw skill has become extremely popular among the heavier weapons.

The most popular colossal weapon is the Giant-Crusher Hammer. The weapon becomes even deadlier when dual-wielding a second hammer and having a character with maxed strength, creating the ultimate powerhouse. Paired with the Lions Claw Ash of War skill, great hammers seem to be at the center of many strength-associated builds.

Both the quick and heavy attacks seem to take forever, but with the right timing, the hammers should come down one after the other, dealing massive amounts of damage. There's even an NPC named Great Horned Tragoth — famed for assisting the Tarnished several times with his own Giant-Crusher.

The stick-and-poke method has been around since the beginning of Souls PvP, yet Elden Ring has made it infamous. Spears, polearms, and other weapons can now be imbued with an Ash of War, or already have one, such as the Frenzyflame Thrust on Vyke's War Spear, inflicting a status effect while also dealing physical damage. Having another spear on the offhand gives a chance for a follow-up attack or a shot to go full combo against the enemy.

The status affliction isn't the only way that spears get better in Elden Ring, but the actual skills themselves, such as the lightning attack on the spear Bolt of Gransax, are seriously powerful. These skills scale with a character's stats, making them more potent the stronger the build.

This blade, which can be acquired after killing Rykard, has seen more use as more players have leaned towards making Faith stat-based builds. The weapon itself scales with Faith, and so does its Ash of War skill called Takers Flames. Takers Flames creates a volcanic outburst from the ground stemming from underneath the holder's feet to their enemy. The fire and faith damage combined can make for impressive attacks, even when it comes to defeating Elden Ring's hardest bosses.

The stream of magma chasing after opponents will certainly cause a panic, and once it catches up to them, each hit steals their health and fills the user's health bar instead.

This greatsword is one of the heaviest weapons in the game. Its skill, Waves of Destruction, derives from gravitational magic in the Lands Between. It functions like Takers Flames but is more aggressive, splitting the floor with purple magic and destroying the surrounding area, making it difficult for enemies to evade.

The sword scales primarily with strength and intelligence, and although the skill relies on magic, it also scales with those stats. This makes it a perfect colossal sword for any strength build that can allocate some points to intelligence.

Magic is one of the best ways to develop your character's abilities. Elden Ring features two types of magic: faith and intelligence, both of which are widely used and usually paired with another physical attack method. Some magic users are confident enough to rely solely on a staff or talisman to progress through their journey.

The Comet Azur spell, which can delete bosses, and the Rock Sling spell were two early signs that magic would be overpowered. Later, faith users would also learn how to solely use talismans and incantations to defeat their enemies.

Bleed remains the most effective status affliction, although it has been significantly nerfed since its launch. With successive attacks being the main focus of the build, Eleanora's Poleblade and dual-wielded curved swords are among the best weapons for this strategy. Focusing on bleed ensures that enemies' health bars will deplete rapidly.

Another way to approach a bleed build is to invest stat points into Arcane and eventually craft weapons with an Occult affinity. The best weapons to use are those with an innate (built-in) bleed effect, such as Bandit Curved Swords or Scavenger's Curved Swords.

The sword obtained after helping Ranni is one of the best weapons to pair with an intelligence-focused build. The Dark Moon Greatsword has received numerous buffs and is rightfully one of the staple swords in all of FromSoftware's games. The Moonlight Greatsword skill beam it launches does immense amounts of damage, and pairing it with a staff in the offhand creates a deadly combination.

Another excellent feature of the sword is the minimal physical stats it requires to carry. An intelligence build scales perfectly with the moonbeam projectile the sword launches. While inflicting the Cold status effect, the physical damage of the sword is increased, allowing you to consistently deal significant damage to enemies. It’s no wonder this sword remains a legendary part of the Souls series.
